Review: THE BED MATE by Kendall Ryan!

My Review: Once again Kendall Ryan proves she is the queen. She took one of my all time favorite tropes and made a fun, original, and most importantly - believable, story. Friends to lovers is my jam, people. And she even manages to give us readers some slow burn despite this only being a novella. A queen, I tell you.

Despite the short length, this book doesn't skimp on characterization. Sam and Maggie are fully developed, and even Sam's doofy friends have enough personality to carry this book. I would have love to see her confront her ex, but I would gladly give up that space in the book for all the amazing scenes we got where our hero and heroine come together.

This is the perfect read to start getting you into the holiday spirit - without beating you over the head with a Christmas theme.

Cover Lovin': 1001 Dark Nights classic - but I'm loving the black, pink, and gray scheme!

Recommendation: Each Room Mate book works as a stand-alone!

Final Rating: FOUR out of FIVE stars (4/5)!! A wonderful edition to the 1001 Dark Nights world, and another fantastic Kendall Ryan tale!

Happy Reading!

From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Kendall Ryan comes a new story in her Room Mate series… I might be a typical guy, but these last few years, my love life’s been anything but. From crazy ex-girlfriends to one night stands who are stage-five clingers, my relationships go bad faster than the milk in your fridge. The only constant has been my best friend Maggie. Fresh off a bad breakup of her own, I invite Maggie to my guy’s skiing weekend knowing she needs an escape from reality. But then something funny starts to happen. I start noticing things about her that I never noticed before. She’s beautiful and doesn’t know it, she’s funny without even trying, and now she’s suddenly single for the first time in forever. Sharing a hotel room with her proves to be the tipping point in our very platonic friendship. Suddenly I want to put my hands, my mouth, and my ... other parts ... all over her gorgeous body. I want to claim her, make sure no man touches her ever again. But then her groveling ex shows up, and Maggie’s torn. Am I ready to screw up the best relationship I’ve ever had for a shot at something more? **Every 1001 Dark Nights novella is a standalone story. For new readers, it’s an introduction to an author’s world. And for fans, it’s a bonus book in the author’s series. We hope you'll enjoy each one as much as we do.** ADD TO GOODREADS

Every now and then, Sam would shoot me a sympathetic look, knowing that I had no idea what they were talking about, but in truth, their company was a welcome break. Between what the woman in the shop had said and the lady on the plane’s insinuation, my mind was going a mile a minute and I was beginning to look at Sam in a way I definitely shouldn’t be. Okay, so, yeah, he was sexy. That was a no-brainer. I shot him a furtive glance, taking in the corded muscles of his forearms and the lock of dark hair that constantly flopped onto his forehead. And sure, he was sweet and attentive. He looked after me and made sure I always had a fresh drink and that I wasn’t cold or hot. He held the door for me and pulled out my chair when we went to restaurants. Hell, he’d been looking forward to this trip for months and he’d sacrificed an entire day just to make sure I got here safe and didn’t spend my time sulking. Still, that didn’t mean he had feelings for me. He hadn’t argued when I’d mentioned us being like brother and sister or anything. No, this whole line of thinking was ludicrous. Sam was a good friend. That was all…wasn’t it? After all, Trevor had loved me once and he never did any of that. Admittedly, that wasn’t the best example, but it proved my point all the same. In Sam’s shoes, Trevor never would have missed the chance to hit the slopes with his friends. He hadn’t even skipped the business trip that fell on my twenty-fifth birthday years back. But Sam was there, my brain supplied helpfully. Again, not an indication that he had feelings for me. People were just different. Sam was one of the good ones. And if he liked me surely I’d have known by now. He’d have told me or…something. “Is that your phone?” Sam turned to me and I blinked, only realizing that I’d been so encompassed in my own thoughts that I’d totally zoned out. “What?” I asked, confused. “Don’t you hear that vibrating noise? I think it’s your phone.” I listened hard and then heard the low, gentle hum he was talking about. “Yep, probably you-know-who again.” I sighed, but fished the phone from my tiny handbag all the same on the off chance it was a family member with an emergency. It wasn’t Trevor, though. He had called—I had seven new missed messages from him since I’d left for the airport, but I also had three missed calls from my friend Deanna. I hadn’t spoken to her in more than two weeks because she’d been away on a long-awaited safari, but now more than ever I really needed to hear her voice.             A New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and USA Today bestselling author of more than two dozen titles, Kendall Ryan has sold over 1.5 million books and her books have been translated into several languages in countries around the world. Review: DEFIANT QUEEN by Meghan March!

My Review: Yes! Thank goodness I finally got more Mount. After the last cliffhanger, I have been more than a little on edge. I've been stuck somewhere between forcing everyone I know to immediately go buy book one so I have someone to talk to about it, but then also warning everyone to wait until closer to the series being completed, because this cliffhanger business is serious. Like, heart skipping a beat serious.

I love that we get some of Mount's background, and we are finally starting to see a different side of him. While book one featured Mount as a hot bad guy you couldn't help but be attracted to despite how clearly dark he was... Defiant Queen shows us more to him. He does feel, he does have reasons behind his behavior... He's still totally a bad guy, but.. I get it, I guess.

I also have to say how much I appreciate Kiera - and how author Meghan March writes her. Kiera is developing some feelings for Mount, not that she might want to admit them, but she doesn't lose her fire. She is still herself, and doesn't suddenly become a sappy, useless heroine. And that's why I keep reading this author.. She writes amazing characters that I love. And some very, very hot scenes.

Cover Lovin': Hot!

Recommendation: You *MUST* have read book one, since this is a direct sequel.

Final Rating: FIVE out of FIVE stars (5/5)!! I need more *now* please!

Happy Reading!

The Mount Trilogy continues with Defiant Queen... I’m his entertainment. His toy. Payment on a debt. I tell myself I hate him, but every time he walks into the room, my body betrays me. How can I want him and fear him in the same moment? They told me he’d mess with my head. Make it go to war with my body. But I didn’t realize it would be complete anarchy. I should’ve known better. When Mount’s involved, there are no rules. I will not surrender. I will not show weakness. I’ll stand my ground and make it out of this bargain with my heart and soul intact. But he has other plans . . .   Defiant Queen is the second book of the Mount Trilogy. Mount and Keira's story concludes in Sinful Empire. ADD TO GOODREADS

Their breathing quieted. Heartbeats slowed and melded. The dying sun cast long shadows through their bedroom window. “You have to help her,” Mallory said quietly. His arm curled over her hip, and he pulled her closer. “I can take another week off work,” she said. “No way are you getting involved in this.” She looked over her shoulder and smiled. “You can’t stop me.” He kissed her fingers and smiled sadly. “I know I can’t stop you, but if you insist on coming with me, then I won’t go.” His silver gaze wasn’t angry or demanding. It was calm. Implacable. Mallory blew out a big breath of frustration. It was the first time Alex had refused to let her be involved in something. She knew he hid things from her occasionally. But the two of them had made a promise to one another the day investigators had uncovered her sister’s body. No more lies. Ever. And that was why he was telling her this now, she realized. Her fingers gripped his, hugging him to her. “I don’t want something bad to happen to you.” “I can take care of myself.” She swallowed. “I know you can, but I don’t want you to have to take care of yourself. I want to look after you. I want to be the one watching your back.” He ran a finger down her spine and followed it with his lips. She closed her eyes. “You know what I mean.” “I do. I feel it every time you go to work without me.” But he let her go anyway, because she needed the space to do her job, and he respected that. He respected her. She rolled onto her back. She didn’t want Alex to go on this job without her, but she knew she wasn’t the only one who needed space to work, even when that work wasn’t clearly defined. She touched his face. “I can’t go.” Alex insisted, but there was no conviction behind his words. “We have a wedding to prepare for and a dog to look after.” Rex was in the living room on the couch. He’d fetch a ball from dawn until dusk, but he was generally a couch potato which suited them both perfectly right now. Mallory intended to get a puppy or two after the wedding. She’d convince Alex by reminding him dogs were good security. “All you have to do for the wedding is turn up— and write those place name cards. The wedding planner,” who Alex had nicknamed the General for good reason, “is doing virtually everything else including arranging transportation for all the guests who are flying in. I can make any last-minute adjustments and double-check on the flowers and still go to work every day next week. Hiring that woman is the best idea you’ve ever had.” He laid his ear against her belly. “Not the best idea, but pretty inspired.” She sank her hands into his hair. “When will you be back?” “I imagine Wednesday at the latest.” He placed one large palm on her stomach and held her gaze. “I won’t take any unnecessary risks, and I won’t do anything stupid. If the child is there I will either figure out a way for the legat to get involved.” The legat was the FBI’s official presence in a foreign country. “Or I’ll sneak them away when no one is looking and bring her, and Jane, back to the States.” Alex kissed her stomach again. She knew he was impatient to meet the newest member of their family. “I’m not sure the daughter— Taylor— will remember her mother after four years.” Mallory’s heart clenched, and her hand went to where their baby was kicking her low ribs. Alex linked their fingers. She already felt overprotective. The idea of someone stealing her baby… She swallowed hard. This was important. Jane Sanders had always seemed a little aloof, and no wonder. Her child had been stolen and the fact it was by the father made it no less heartbreaking for the mother. Mallory touched Alex’s lips. “Don’t be late for the wedding. Promise?” Silver eyes met hers. “I promise.”

EXCERPT:

Prologue
Mina Automne danced through the pain until she managed to turn it into pleasure. She didn't need music to accompany the movements of her legs, of her arms, of her fingers, for the wind was the conductor of an orchestra of the most particular instruments. It shook the leaves of apple trees and made them chime. It played among grapevines and teased them like fingertips on violin strings.
The lavender flowers bowed forward as Mina's neck arched gracefully backwards.
The weeds trembled, while Mina's body spun and leaped higher and lighter.
The sky above was a cerulean blue, dotted with pure white clouds, and Mina's lithe limbs reached for those unblemished shapes.
When she danced, her parents' disapproval did not matter; when her frame played, the hurtful words of her ex-lover could not break her.
Mina was shaping her life around her art, and she was going to be the greatest. There was nothing wrong with her choices, and there was nothing wrong with her body. She was meant to be a ballerina, and she was capable of feeling pleasure.
The wind teased her fiery red curls; the long strands caressed her bare shoulders and arms, and her blood felt ablaze with adrenaline. Beads of sweat ran along the pale skin of her face, and touched her lips. Mina licked the drops, and tasted salt mingled with excitement. She arched up towards the bright sky, and declared herself a creature of power and beauty.
